Meet the Staff Behind the Academy
WIVA's administrative staff is comprised of professionals dedicated to making a virtual academy a very real learning experience. Here are some of the people who work behind the scenes to keep WIVA responsive to your needs:
- Mr. Bill Harbron, Superintendent
- Prior to coming to Northern Ozaukee School District, Mr. Harbron served as the principal of the Maple Dale-Indian Hills School District in Milwaukee, middle school principal in the Appleton Area School District, and superintendent of the Denmark School District, and worked for CESA 7. His primary role as superintendent is to serve as the chief educational leader for the school district. He also has the responsibility of maintaining the focus of the district and community on student learning and achievement. Mr. Harbron serves as a mentor with the Best Friends of Neenah and Menasha and has been mentoring the same child for the last seven years. He is currently pursuing his doctorate at Edgewood College.
- Mr. Kurt Bergland, Principal
- The Northern Ozaukee School District appointed Kurt Bergland as principal of the Wisconsin Virtual Academy in July, 2007. Prior to that, Kurt spent three years as the New Berlin Public Schools' Coordinator of Standards and Assessment. He has 14 years of teaching experience in Wisconsin at the middle and high school levels (social studies and philosophy). In his spare time, Kurt enjoys family activities, baseball, and reading.
- Mr. Mike Skurek, Director of Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction
- Mike Skurek comes to the Northern Ozaukee School District with a broad range of experience as a teacher, coach, technology integrator, and curriculum specialist for both the Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools and CESA 5. Mike has completed two master's degree programs-one from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and one from Cardinal Stritch University. In his spare time, Mike enjoys running, biking, and Nordic skiing with his family.
- Mrs. Barb Peterka, Director of Special Education and Pupil Services
- Barb Peterka holds a B.S. in psychology and an M.S.E. in school psychology. She is licensed as a school psychologist, principal, and director of special education/pupil services. Prior to working in schools, Mrs. Peterka spent seven years in the community mental health field and another seven years in education.
- Mrs. Sandra Henke, Administrative Assistant
- Sandra Henke was a school volunteer and classroom aide prior to joining WIVA as the school secretary. She was also a volunteer a soccer and baseball coach, taught religious education at her church, and has dedicated her skills to the Early Childhood Community School.
